Raiders Give Up Early Lead; Fall To Trojans

It appeared that when Frontenac came out Friday night in it's CNC matchup at Girard they were on a mission as the Raider's Tanner Mendicki took the opening kickoff back 85 yards for the first score of the season. The Raider's then held the Trojan's on the next possession when the Trojan's failed to convert on 4th down. The first play from scrimmage, quarterback Ben Gettler found a wide open Zac Palumbo on a bootleg pass that led to a 59 yard score putting the Raiders up 14-0. The lead was cut into on the next possesion as Girard's Will Holt made a bobbling catch then raced into the endzone for a 72 yard score. Girard continued to hold the Raiders out of the endzone the rest of the evening and rack up 42 points in the process.

Final score: Girard (1-1) 42 Frontenac (0-2) 14.

Raiders Route Red Devils

Thursday night, it took the Raiders four plays to set the tone for what would be their most lopsided victory of the year, a 49-14 pounding of the Erie Red Devils.

Frontenac came out of the gates fast. On the third play from scrimmage quarterback Joe Saia hit Josh Garcia for a 35 yard pass play and got the ball down to Erie's 5 yard line. Running back Tanner Mendicki then put the finishing touches on the drive by getting into the endzone on the very next play. Kicker Ryan Lechian added the point after giving the Raiders a 7-0 lead.

It didn't take long for Erie to strike back, on their first play from scrimmage quarterback Kyle Lucas floated up a pass that was nearly intercepted by Raider DB Ethan Ketterman, but bounced off of Ketterman's hands and into the hands of Erie receiver Tyler Kiister. Kiister then raced 69 yards for the score. The point after attempt was no good leaving the score at 7-6 in favor of the Raiders.

Frontenac then struck back with two more scores of their own on a 2 yard run from Mendicki and a 46 yard pass play from Saia to Mendicki. The Raiders went into halftime with a 35-14 lead.

The second half was much the same for the Raiders as they piled on two more scores to put the game out of reach and seal the victory 49-14.

Raiders Fall Again

The Frontenac Raiders saw their playoff hopes dashed and 10 years of consecutive playoff appearances come to a halt on Friday night when the Cherryvale Chargers knocked them off by a score of 28-7.

Cherryvale started the scoring early when Charger running back, Robert Lane scored from six yards out. Cherryvale's first possession was kept alive when Lane hit a wide open Kennan Booe for a first down on a fake punt. The Chargers also scored on their next possession bringing the Raider deficit to 14-0.

Frontenac then got on the scoreboard midway through the 2nd quarter when quarterback Joe Saia hit Nick Standlee for a 26 yard score. Ryan Lechian nailed the extra point to bring the score to 14-7.

Cherryvale didn't waste anytime retaliating by scoring on a 72 yard pass play from Charger quraterback Brandon Blackburn to receiver Chance Baker. Trailing 21-7, the Raiders had a scare with just 7 seconds left in the half when Raider running back Zac Palumbo was injured on a play and laid for several minutes on the field while medical staff attended to him. Palumbo was taken to the hospital for precautionary measures.

The Raiders came out in the second half determined to get back in the game but never could catch up. Final score: Chargers 28 Raiders 7.

Lancers Outlast Raiders

In the first round of the Kansas 3A District 2 playoffs, the Southeast Lancers mounted a 22-6 victory over the Frontenac Raiders. Southeast used two scores late in the game to seal the win and move to 1-0 in the district.

The first half of the game saw both teams come out and put together good drives, but both failed to put the ball in the endzone. Southeast finally broke through in the third quarter on a 1 yard dive by Daniel Rank. Southeast faked the extra point and converted on the 2-point conversion taking a 8-0 lead. Raider wideout, Josh Garcia, then took the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to score Frontenac's first and only touchdown of the night. The Raiders then lined up for the 2-point conversion, but failed when quarterback Joe Saia's pass fell off the finger tips of tight end John Oppliger. Southeast got on the board late in the fourth quarter to take a 15-6 lead with a little over a minute left to play. The Raiders then turned the ball over on their second play from scrimmage when Joe Saia threw an interception to a Southeast defender which was returned down to the Raider 4 yard line. Southeast senior, Ryan Martin, then put the finishing touches on the game by punching in a touchdown from 4 yards out.

With the loss, the Raiders now move to 2-5 on the season and 0-1 in district play. They will host the Cherryvale Chargers (7-0;1-0) at the Raider Sports Complex 7:00 P.M. Friday night.
